The teaching profession is not like any other as it requires a lot of training and practical experience for you to succeed. It is not easy to take care of students and to help mould their character and behaviour but teachers are able to achieve this. Teachers are role models and have over the years impacted the lives of many young people. They play a major role in the personality development process of children right from childhood to adult stage. From pre-school to the university level, teachers are part of the development process of individuals at various stages of their lives. It is therefore pertinent that teachers should possess requisite leadership skills. It is also known that the demand, experience of teaching, skills and knowledge required for one to be a teacher can also qualify them to become leaders. These skills set them apart and help them excel in their chosen profession. Some are learnt while the others may be part of their personality.

Let me examine some of the leadership qualities that teachers have:

1. They are committed
Teachers are committed to their task of teaching and are one of the most dedicated set of workers who commit themselves to providing the best education training to their students. They show this dedication by working with parents to identify the areas where students face challenges with a view to helping them. They also spend lots of time in preparing their lesson work and adopt the best teaching

method or style that benefits students most. A leader is one who is committed to whatever he has put his mind to do. Unsuccessful leaders do not pursue any worthwhile goal; therefore do not have anything to be committed to.

2. They embrace change
Change is a constant in life and anyone who wants to make progress must be willing to change methods, attitudes and behaviour. In the teaching profession, teachers experience quite a number of changes from the number of students in their class to the type of teaching equipment and materials they are given. There are also changes in administration and teaching policies. Change is expected by teachers and they strive to thrive irrespective of these changes and make the necessary adjustments.

3. They are good communicators
Teachers are communicating everyday as their profession requires this. Most of them understand how to interact with their students, parents and colleagues at work. They are also trained to listen properly and to respect the opinions of other people. Those that are great teachers have learnt how to communicate in a way that their students understand. They use different communication methods as they understand that people receive information in various ways.

4. They are good team players
Teachers understand that they need to work with others in order to have a good teaching environment. They are able to relate with their colleagues properly and attract those with similar passion. As a team, teachers work together to maintain the standards of education in the school with their individual contributions. Each person does his or her own part and everyone takes credit for its success.

5. They are passionate
Teachers are passionate about their job and are always seeking ways to improve on their teaching techniques. They strive to keep abreast with developments in the industry and are continuously sharpening their skills. They are also very observant and learn from the teaching methods of their colleagues. It is also observed that those teachers that are passionate always try to get feedback from their students and even colleagues. This enables them to improve on areas where they are lacking.

6. They are able to create a good classroom culture
Teachers understand the structures and systems which help to create a good classroom culture. They know how to

imbibe discipline in their students. This quality would also help them function as leaders in any other setting.

7. They empathize with others
Teachers who have leadership qualities know how to cater for the needs of both students and their parents. They understand the need to show love and care as this creates a good learning environment for both students and teachers. Teachers are also able to assist students get back on track when they struggle with their studies. They do not only show empathy to their colleagues but to their students as well.

8. They are resourceful people
Teachers are known to be resourceful and capable of working in difficult situations. They are always willing to help their students achieve their goals. They do all that is within their ability to be up-to-date with the latest developments in education and are creative in their approach to solving problems.

9. They are persistent
Persistence is a key leadership quality and teachers have this in large supply. They are not easily moved by the challenges they encounter in their chosen career and strive to be the best in all that they do. This quality enables to rise to the top of the ladder in their chosen field.

10. They are willing to learn new things
Leaders are developed through a process of continuous development. They seek ways of learning and re-learning new things. In this way, they keep themselves abreast of significant changes in the teaching profession.

11. They deliver on expectations
Teachers have integrity and are able to meet deadlines. They are able to translate their thoughts and plans into action.

12. They are great planners
Another leadership quality that teachers possess is their ability to plan. Successful leaders are good planners. They plan their day and teaching activities and know exactly what they intend to achieve. They also understand the skills and knowledge which they need to impart to their students to make them successful.

13. They prioritize
Leadership is all about prioritizing among several options available. Teachers understand this very well and are able to identify what they need to do to make a difference in the life of their students. They make short term sacrifices that would contribute to the long term development of their students.
