All over the world, the importance of Organisational Behaviour among Managers today cannot be ignored. It plays a great role in assisting them deal with the numerous challenges that their organizations face in this century. It also helps them have a proper understanding of human behaviour in the work place. This field of study is very relevant to everyone because it helps us understand behaviour. It is important to know that the success or failure of an organisation is determined mainly by the daily behaviour of its employees. It is therefore important to study behaviour of individuals in an organisation and how this affects performance. In today's world, it is now recognized that this field of study is the foundation and that Management must understand that increased productivity levels is connected to the behaviour of employees in the work place.

Organisational Behaviour is also popularly described as a study which has to do with people and the way in which they interact within groups. It focuses on studying human behaviour within an organisation and the relationship between this behaviour and the organisation. It also seeks to understand how behavioural patterns of workers affect productivity levels in an organisation. The behaviour of humans plays a great role in productivity in organizations. It is important that Management understands that meeting the needs and expectations of employees affects the achievement of organisational goals and objectives.

can also be described as the study of the internal and external factors that influence people and how it leads to an increase or decrease in their willingness to contribute to the overall good of an organisation. Organisational behaviour tries to identify the negative and positive influences that have an effect on individuals. The environment in which a worker performs his duties must be encouraging and motivating as this would help them in achieving organisational goals. If the work environment is de-motivating, the worker would have no zeal to go the extra mile in the performance of his duties and this would lower the productivity levels of that particular organisation. The organisation must have a good work culture in place that encourages each employee and enables them understand that they are part of a team. It also has to do with having clearly defined roles for each worker and member of the team in order to minimize conflicts in the organisation. Every individual worker should understand their job functions and description. The reporting lines should also be spelt out properly so as to eliminate unnecessary friction between team members or the various departments. Organisational behaviour is a broad is a very broad field of study and is very important. It studies the behaviour of individuals, work groups/ teams and how an organisation behaves.

Various definitions exist for Organisational Behaviour. Stephen P. Robbins in his definition says that it is a field of study that investigates the impact which individuals, groups and structure have on behaviour within an organisation. This knowledge can be applied towards improving the effectiveness of an organisation. Another expert, Keith Davis defines it as the study and application of the knowledge of how individuals and groups act within an organisation. Its purpose is to identify ways by which people can act more effectively. Luthans defined Organisational Behaviour as the understanding, prediction and management of how human behaviour affects the performance of an organisation. It focuses on the what people do in an organisation and how their behaviour affects the organisation's performance. It is also a scientific field that requires research to be conducted to provide knowledge about it and studies how individuals and groups act within an organisation. It is also a field of study that helps managers learn how to influence the behaviour of employees and improve the work


environment in an organisation. It seeks to understand the processes involved in human behaviour and the changes that occur as they function within an organisation.

Another school of thought speaking on Organisational Behaviour defines it as a study that focuses on how co-workers interact with each other. This includes the relationship that exists between superiors and subordinates. It is important for Management to understand how behaviour among these groups work as this would help improve interpersonal relationship in the work place and ultimately increase productivity. This field of study helps one understand individuals and groups and how to coordinate their efforts and behaviour to achieve the predetermined goals of an organisation. It is also the science of understanding the factors that influence certain behavioural patterns of these individuals and groups and how they these could be used for the good of the whole organisation. The knowledge gotten from this can then be organized in such a way that would bring greater growth. It studies also their challenges and complexities that usually arise in these relationships with a view to understanding and reducing them or perhaps preventing them from occurring. It is a broad discipline and very useful in helping Management make important decisions.

Organisational Behaviour also helps Management learn what makes some employees more successful than others in the organisation. It can be used to understand the peculiar traits that enable some employees excel more than others. This field of study also helps to identify how groups and teams in an organisation can work together effectively. Without an understanding of OB, certain behaviours of employees may be misconstrued to mean something negative while it may bring positive growth and productivity for the organisation. It would also make it easier to know how and what can be used to motivate employees to maximize resources and reduce loss. It also helps Management know what it needs to be done to improve relations with their employees and reduce friction. The definition of this very important subject would not be complete without stating that it also helps in eliminating on-the-job stress both at the Management and lower cadre levels. Understanding OB also helps Management learn how to design systems to enable them receive feedback from employees. It helps in no small measure by improving synergy in the organisation.
