It also helps them have a proper understanding of human behaviour in the work place. This field of study is very relevant to everyone because it helps us understand behaviour. It is important to know that the success or failure of an organisation is determined mainly by the daily behaviour of its employees. The reporting lines should also be spelt out properly so as to eliminate unnecessary friction between team members or the various departments. Robbins in his definition says that it is a field of study that investigates the impact which individuals, groups and structure have on behaviour within an organisation. This knowledge can be applied towards improving the effectiveness of an organisation. Another expert, Keith Davis defines it as the study and application of the knowledge of how individuals and groups act within an organisation. Its purpose is to identify ways by which people can act more effectively. Luthans defined Organisational Behaviour as the understanding, prediction and management of how human behaviour affects the performance of an organisation. It focuses on the what people do in an organisation and how their behaviour affects the organisation's performance. It is also a scientific field that requires research to be conducted to provide knowledge about it and studies how individuals and groups act within an organisation. It is also a field of study that helps managers learn how to influence the behaviour of employees and improve the work
environment in an organisation. It seeks to understand the processes involved in human behaviour and the changes that occur as they function within an organisation.
Another school of thought speaking on Organisational Behaviour defines it as a study that focuses on how co-workers interact with each other. This includes the relationship that exists between superiors and subordinates. It is important for Management to understand how behaviour among these groups work as this would help improve interpersonal relationship in the work place and ultimately increase productivity. It can be used to understand the peculiar traits that enable some employees excel more than others. This field of study also helps to identify how groups and teams in an organisation can work together effectively. Without an understanding of OB, certain behaviours of employees may be misconstrued to mean something negative while it may bring positive growth and productivity for the organisation. It would also make it easier to know how and what can be used to motivate employees to maximize resources and reduce loss. It also helps Management know what it needs to be done to improve relations with their employees and reduce friction. The definition of this very important subject would not be complete without stating that it also helps in eliminating on-the-job stress both at the Management and lower cadre levels. Understanding OB also helps Management learn how to design systems to enable them receive feedback from employees. It helps in no small measure by improving synergy in the organisation.
