Leadership is everything I have always said. In every area of endeavour, leadership is important and determines largely whether the venture would eventually be successful or not. Leaders are the ones who show the way to others to follow and skilful leaders are those who make the greatest impact. A leader is a trail blazer and requires experience, knowledge and skill in order to become successful. Without a leader, there is no one to steer the business in the direction that it should go which would ultimately wreck it. It is leaders that put together the right resources that would help generate profits. A business will be directionless without an effective leader.
Business leadership skills are important for every individual tasked with the responsibility of leading an organisation to its expected destination. First of all, he or she must understand the how and why of leadership in order to be successful. Some of these skills are discussed below.
1. Ability to utilize resourcesThe leader must be able to utilize the resources of land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship towards the success of the organisation. Leaders should be skilful in using all these resources to achieve set goals. Some of these resources may be in short supply but it is only skilful leaders that would understand how to manage them efficiently. 2. Ability to lead by exampleLeaders are seen as forerunners in any organisation and should set the standards that others would follow. Employees, most of the time behaves like their leaders, therefore it is important for them to set the right example in all they do. If the leader is lackadaisical and uncommitted to the ideals and goals of the organisation, it would rub off on the other members of the team. Leaders must be punctual to work and careful in all of their dealings unless they want the vision of the organisation to be derailed. Their duty is to show the people the way to go and actually lead them on the journey. This would ensure the growth and success of the business.
3. Should be passionateA leader who lacks passion would not succeed in his assignment as the other members of his team would not be motivated or committed. Lack of passion can destroy the future of the business and it is good to know that a passionate leader inspires others to become like him. For the leader to be passionate, he must first believe in the organisation and its ideals.
4. Skill to Organize ThingsOrganizing things in the right way is a skill that every business leader must possess. The business can only grow when things are done properly and an effective system is in place. When this is done, things naturally flow and the organization thrives. The leader must be posses this business leadership skill or else his team would be disorganized which will gradually cause the organization to lose revenue. Proper organization leads to greater productivity and profitability. A disorganized will destroy the organization. It is therefore a necessity for leaders to develop this skill.
5. They must be servant firstEvery leader in an organization can only succeed to the extent to which they themselves have been able to follow. Leaders are servants and not dictators. It is said that the greatest leaders are servants and followers too. Servant leaders are able to work closely with their team members and usually achieve more than those who boss people around. It is easier to get the best out of your team when you relate well with them and make them
see you as a colleague rather than a master. Such leaders always encourage their team members.
6. Good interpersonal relationshipSuccessful leaders understand their employees and know how to draw out the best from them. Developing good interpersonal relationships requires skill and it enables leaders achieve more in their work. It is good to know your employees by name and get to know something about their personal lives. This will endear them to you more and make them contribute their best to the organization. This will make them feel the organization cares for them and enable them go the extra mile in order that the business succeeds.
7. Ability to communicate effectivelyOne vital business leadership skill is communication. The organization would not be able to effectively pursue its vision and succeed with a good communication channel from the leader to the employees. The leader should know how to pass information across to his subordinates and vice versa. There should also be mutual respect on both sides. Communication is two-way channel and leaders that listen patiently always do well in leading people. Leaders who talk and never listen are never effective. People like it when they are listened to and it is easier to get to the bottom of issues faster when the leaders is a good listener.
8. Ability to be daring and boldA skilful business leader must be bold and ready to dare new things. The world of business is a tough and highly competitive environment so it is only those who are bold that would take their rightful positions. The business leader should know when to enter the market and when to avoid it.
9. Ability to take responsibilityResponsible leaders are successful leaders. A business leader must be able to take responsibility for the success or failure of an organization. The buck begins and ends with the leader. Leaders don't blame others but take responsibility no matter the situation. Always remember that responsibility is the price leaders must pay if they will ever succeed. Being responsible enables leaders to take calculated but not careless risks. It also makes a business leader to pay the necessary sacrifice to bring success and growth to the organization.
